Microsoft has had major success with its newest ERP iteration, Dynamics NAV 2015. However, it’s not going to stop there, especially when it wants to help its ERP & manufacturing customers do more. Already, the NAV development team is working on the next version, named Corfu after the city in western Greece, due out in 2015. There are some major steps forward for users of the software, with the key focus being on functionality as a whole. Considering the constant importance of new functions that will help make operations easier, there is a lot to look forward to with the NAV vNext Corfu.

Spirit tracks
MSDynamicsWorld notes some of the more major changes happening with Corfu, confirming a roadmap from Microsoft that identified it as the next version. When the developer elaborated on development, they noted that these new features are steps forward in the future, akin to railroad tracks that capture the spirit of what is intended in the future of the platform. These are not fully-realized features, but they are a step in the right direction. Their evolution will likely to something more substantial in the coming years.

For example, there are three areas that the NAV team is specifically working on improving in this update. The first is workflow, a critical component of all ERP software and one that is intended to make orders easier to complete. The second is document management and OCR. This will likely allow better handling of paper documents and their digital migration to Dynamics NAV. The final aspect that’s being worked on is e-services integration. This is referring to other software platforms that cover parts of the manufacturing business ERP doesn’t work on. These developments will make NAV more effective in the near future.

On the road to better services
There are other key elements that are being discussed. The first is user experience. Likely taking cues from the concepts of omnichannel marketing and retail, Microsoft is looking to streamline the entire user experience with Corfu. The end result is that over every NAV client, whether it’s the original PC platform on Windows or a mobile version on a Google Android smartphone, looks and feels the same way {something off in this sentence}. By having a more seamless UX, it’ll be easier for manufacturers to train employees on how to use the new system, making change management more effective overall.

This will be done using a single code base from which to develop all the clients on the platform, according to Conspicuous Recruitment. It has the added benefit of making it easier to customize the software. Companies and NAV Partners will be able to develop their own modules, and it will work on all clients.

In addition, some points are being discussed that, while not officially announced, will likely impact Dynamics NAV Corfu. One of these is making use of Microsoft’s Azure Service Bus to allow low-level remote operations to be triggered without launching the client. It remains to be seen whether they’ll be implemented in Corfu or what is likely NAV 2017. However, with the future of NAV development being “agile,” it’s important to remember that nothing is completely planned.
