The first use of a barcode occurred on June 26, 1974, to scan a 10-pack of Juicy Fruit gum. 26 years later, the same barcode technology exists but has also evolved to include different barcode formats.

When it comes to Dynamics 365 Business Central, barcodes are no stranger. Apps exist to help users easily incorporate barcodes into the Business Central platform because barcodes can speed up workflows and significantly increase accuracy.

One such app is Barcode Generator from Insight Works. Barcode Generator makes it possible to add linear (Code39) or 2D (Data Matrix) barcodes to reports in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. You can modify existing reports such as invoices, order confirmations, and production orders to include barcodes, or you can create new reports with barcodes.

Both 1D Code39 and 2D Data Matrix codes are supported. 1D barcodes will generally support between 20-25 characters. For those looking for a higher capacity barcode, you’ll want to look at a 2D barcode where storing up to 2,000 characters is possible.

With Barcode Generator you can:

  • Easily generate product “label” reports within Business Central and print product labels with barcodes.
  • Include a barcode on a Sales Order, so when accessing the paper document as it is passed around departments, it can simply be scanned to bring up the record in Business Central.
  • Include barcodes on packing slips for each item; the receiver can then scan the packing slip instead of the product boxes.
  • Include barcodes on pick tickets of bulk items, collect the items, and scan the pick tickets as each item is retrieved.

Getting started with Barcode Generator is as easy as visiting Microsoft AppSource and clicking “Get it now” or visit the extensions marketplace within Business Central.
