Two bills recently introduced in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives would allow all employees the opportunity to request more flexible working schedules that enable them to work nonstandard hours and potentially from different locations. If this legislation becomes law, timekeeping software will become even more relevant to businesses to help them best keep tabs on an increasingly distributed workforce.
The proposed law, known as the Flexibility for Working Families Act, would encourage Americans to seek out and request more flexible working arrangements. According to one of the bill's supporters, Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, the proposed law would help all workers be more productive and allow employers to keep key staff members on board for longer.
"Across all sectors and industries, flexible work arrangements are a key to meeting the 21st Century's diverse workforce needs," said Rep. Carolyn Maloney, the House sponsor of the bill. "These voluntary arrangements between employees and employers to change the time, amount or location that work is conducted, allows workers to meet the needs of job and home. Studies show that these policies help businesses reduce turnover and boost employee productivity. It's a clear win-win for all."
Other benefits for flexible working include:
- Enabling businesses to stay open at all times. For example, the Calgary Herald reported that some companies operating in downtown Calgary were able to stay online during recent massive flooding in the area because employees were able to work from home.
- Making it easier for employees with young children or elderly parents to more cost effectively take care of their family and still complete mission-critical tasks.
- Reduced sick days taken, as workers who have an illness like a cold or the flu can still get work done while also not infecting co-workers
Overcome flexible work challenges with timekeeping software, cloud-based ERP
Although the many proponents of flexible working arrangements point to its multiple benefits, many others still do not think it is worthwhile to pursue because it presents just as many problems. For example, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer earlier this year made headlines when an internal company memo banning telework was leaked to the public. Mayer said that working from home allows employees to slack off and it discourages internal collaboration.
In particular, many managers have noted that keeping tabs on employee work can be difficult if the company has no way of physically counting their presence or accounting for their work. With this in place, businesses would be able to quickly and accurately tally employee hours worked and make sure they are working during previously agreed-upon times of the day. This way, corporations could note worker hours without making everyone punch in to a physical clock.
